Clicker Training

You've probably heard of "clicker training" with dogs, but may not be sure how it works.  Derived from the methods used to train marine and zoo animals, clicker training involves using an auditory signal--a clicking sound made by a little instrument not unlike a child's toy some of you may remember--to mark correct behavior.

Does Compliant Canines, LLC train with clickers exclusively?  No.  We will be happy to work with you to choose whatever positive training method you feel most comfortable with.  However, because we believe that clicker training can be the most productive (and most fun!) way to train your dog, we encourage you to give it a go!

For reactive/fearful dogs, clicker training will be the first thing we will recommend.  Why?  Both because it will be necessary to mark the tiniest moment of calm behavior (sometimes that's just a breath!), and because the clicking sound itself may actually help calm the dog through impacting a part of the brain called the amygdala.

Why use a clicker?  Because it gives you the ability to mark correct behaviors--even tiny behaviors--quickly and accurately.  (It takes a little practice to use, but once you get used to it, you can click much more rapidly than you can say "Good dog" or even "Yes.")  When your dog understands exactly which behavior is being marked and treated, your dog will offer that behavior again and again.  In addition, being able to mark the smallest behavior (like a head turn or a paw lift) as it is happening allows you to shape complex behaviors efficiently.
